Alpe Devero

Honestly the Alpe Devero is the kind of place someone who knows the area takes you, otherwise you will never go there on your own!

It’s in Piemonte, about two hours drive from Milan and almost at the border of Switzerland.

I went there during winter to celebrate the bachelor’s and bachelorette’s party of a couple of friends. They are passionate about mountains, very sportive and they are always on the hunt of places like this.

It’s nothing to do with high life mountains crowded of hotels, restaurants, big ski lift systems, thousands ski tracks, shops… here is a small valley at high altitude. The road to reach it gets quite small on the last few kilometres. It runs through the bushes, very close to small chalets and it ends in a car park where you must leave your car and follow only by steps.

Few more steps and you get to the Alpe, you are surrounded by beautiful mountains and that’s pretty much all.

No hotels, nor restaurant. There is only a refuge, in which we stayed, a boarding house and few lodges that for the most are private accommodations, typically small, very simple and still extremely pleasant and well-blended with the surroundings.

Here you can only move around by feet, with snow-rackets or ski mountaineering. The only transports are the snow-cats used to deliver provisions and there aren’t many at all.

It’s a paradise. We did two full days of snow-rackets hiking. The first day we choose an easier and shorter track, while the second day we went for a more demanding one, certainly steeper but we got gifted by a breath-taking view.

If you’d like to try the lodge Castiglioni be aware that you’ll find a very basic solution with dormitory, shared bathrooms, a discreet cold but a warm, welcoming environment and a good cuisine. We were a nice group of people and it was very entertaining, probably next time I’ll try to look for a small chalet to rent.
